«He is my loving God and my fortress, my stronghold and my deliverer, my shield, in whom I take refuge, who subdues peoples under me.» «To the One who gives victory to kings, who delivers his servant David. From the deadly sword deliver me; rescue me from the hands of foreigners whose mouths are full of lies, whose right hands are deceitful.» Psalm 144:2,10-11 NIV
I love the way King David describes God. He recognizes his weakness and defenseless by calling God our Fortress, where he feels safe and protected.
When David says God is his stronghold he recognizes that human life is unstable, and God is the anchor who stabilizes his life.
He also calls God “shield”, reflecting the idea of protection under attack. A shield gives you the assurance of keep moving forward despite the arrows and stones thrown to you.
With this picture we know that we will have God’s protection if we count on him, if we hang on him as we need to hold a shield with a firm hand and arm. As long as we are under or behind God (shield) we will be protected. Of course we will feel the hitting of the arrows and stones, but they never will put an end to our life.
This promise also reminds us that we will almost constantly under attack, but counting on the sure protection of God if we hold on Him.
In this same Psalm David goes further. God is not only protecting us, he also is the one who achieves the victory. He is who, at last, breaks the sword of the enemy. He is the one who, in the worse case, when we have been caught prisoners, will rescue us.
But what I like even more is the final idea poured in this verse. David speaks about those enemy’s which we can not actually perceive, because their weapons are not swords or arrows. God, our “shield”, protects us from this kind of open attack. Lies and deceits are not easy to perceive, and that’s why we could get caught, because we didn’t perceive the attack until we were caught prisoners of those liars. It is under those circumstances where we find the God our deliverer.
In any case, God is our constant Protection under the strongest attack, and our Deliverer when we are deceived and caught prisoners by clever deceitful enemies. God has promised.
