Is there a God?

If you are reading these pages it is because, in one way or another, you are seeking God, or at least you want to know Him in depth.

But the fact of searching does not mean that you have the certainty of His existence, although it is already a good start.

For many his existence is an indisputable fact. It is usually due to a profound personal experience between the individual and the transcendent divine Person. There are many evidences that sustain and support the existence of a divine Being or Higher Force, which we know by “God”. Those same evidences are questioned by many.

Only by considering the set of evidences found in history, archaeology, science and the fulfillment of prophecies that must be known in order to be able to verify or finally discard, that we will find a solid, reasoned and reasonable basis to lead to a conclusive personal verdict.

In short, if there is a God, he has had to find a way to be able to reveal himself to humanity sufficiently. Among many books that claim to contain a superior Revelation, the Bible has stood out for centuries for different reasons.

In the Bible, we find several texts that raise questions about the origin of the information and scientific data reflected there. Let’s look at three examples:

  1. In Job 26:7, text which speaks of the power of God, we read:

“He spreads out the northern skies over empty space; he suspends the earth over nothing.” (NIV)

For a long time, we believed that the earth was flat, and that it was supported on large columns. It was the geocentric (Ptolemaic) theory that placed the Earth at the center of the solar orbit. Later Copernicus and Galileo supported the heliocentric theory that it was the Earth that revolved around the sun. To do this, it had to remain in “nothingness”, in a vacuum. We know that the ecclesiastical and scientific authorities of the time were limited. As was the science of the time, modern science would say of that text in the present: “If what the Bible says in Job 26:7 is not scientifically rational, then it is a lie.”

Today, no one doubts that the Earth is suspended in a vacuum and our children study the solar system in schools. But for hundreds of years (thousands, since between Copernicus born in 1473 A.D. and Job, a book written in the 15th century B.C. about 3000 years ago), he who upheld this theory was in danger of being tortured and killed. How did Job know that? No one had enough “scientific knowledge” to prove or know it for themselves for thousands of years. Only a higher Mind could have revealed it to him.

  1. The weight of the air. Job 28:25.

“To make the weight for the winds, and He weigheth the waters by measure” (KJ21).

Nowadays, no one doubts that air has a weight. But since this biblical declaration, from the 15th century BC until Torricelli discovered the Barometer by chance (in 1643), and thus the atmospheric pressure, more than 3000 years passed.

Evangelista Torricelli, an assistant of Galileo, poured a bit of mercury into a glass tube and placed his thumb on one end. He then tried to shed the mercury out of the tube, but it was impossible. A small vacuum had formed between his thumb and the mercury; in a way, it held the heavy liquid in place. He had discovered “the vacuum”, the air pressure outside kept the mercury inside the tube without letting it out. Since then, we have known that the air weighs. One liter of air, weighs about 1 gram. On one square meter of the earth’s surface rests a column of air that weighs about 10,000 kilos. We are used to this pressure, which is why we don’t notice it. If before this discovery someone had said that the air weighed, we would not have taken him seriously. But if the hypothesis is made “because the Bible says so”, the mockery is assured. Yes, the Bible said that the air weighs. This was written about 3500 years before Torricelli. Everything the Bible says in the name of science was being ridiculed. Nowadays, the same is true, but there is a difference, today no one disputes this “insanity” of the weight of the air.

  1. Isaiah, speaking of God, made the following statement about the roundness of the earth. Isaiah 40:22.

“He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth, and its people are like grasshoppers. He stretches out the heavens like a canopy, and spreads them out like a tent to live in.”. (NVI)

In Proverbs 8:27, there is another statement on this subject:

“When He prepared the heavens, I was there, When He drew a circle on the face of the deep” (NKJV).

When Christopher Columbus said that the Earth was round, the scientists of the time made fun of him. In fact, he took this idea out of his reading of the Bible. Today, everyone is convinced that the earth is round. Between Columbus and Isaiah, there is an interval of more than 2000 years. So, for more than 2300 years, all those who said that the Earth is round, “because the Bible says so”, were mocked, despised and even persecuted because it was not “scientific”.

If the Bible proved to be right about things that were “foolishness” until it has been proven to be correct, why should we doubt on other parts of the Bible that say things that seem “contrary” to science? It is clear that in all these cases, humanity took thousands of years to develop its knowledge and technology, to verify or prove what the Bible says. Therefore, these affirmations had to be brought to those who wrote, by a superior Being, the Creator of all this world and what it contains.

I invite you, dear reader, to continue to discover the Bible and, through it, the God who surpasses all our imagination and desires to reveal Himself and to reveal to us vital information for each human being.
